I am primarily trying to compare the 35mm / 50mm focal length. Not so much my Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 G vs Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 G. Though I would at some point want to compare my Nikon D300 w/35mm vs my Nikon D700 w/50mm, but that’s for another day ;~)
This first comparison is at a Cafe. Indoor and the subject in relative close proximity. the pix on the left column are 35mm and the right 50mm. The viewing area really doesn’t seem to be significantly different.
What is really funny about these shots is that I was sure I had taken them with my new toy the 35mm f/1.8 G. It turns out I had my FX 50mm f/1.4 G on my Nikon D80. Completely unintentionally.
I personally own a Prime Lens, Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 G, but I have borrowed & rented a wide range of them over the years and they are simply the best.
Here are a few samples.
Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 (FX Format)
Nikkor 35mm f/2 (FX Format)
Nikkor 50mm f/1.4
Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D (FX Format)
Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 G (FX Format)
Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D (DX Format)
Nikkor 105mm f/1.4 (FX Format)
I really should have gone for X1D with the 90mm vs D300 with the 85mm but this is what I had so this is what I got to try wtih.
Aperture: f/16.0, Shutter: 1/60s, ISO: 200
Aperture: f/8.0, Shutter: 1/60s, ISO: 200
Aperture: f/4.0, Shutter: 1/30s, ISO: 800 / 1600 – completely forgot to set them both to ISO 800 😦
Aperture: f/13.0, Shutter: 1/60s, ISO: 200
